A proposed VR installation merging the digital and the physical, where the audience is invited to partake in a ritual. They start by being given an oil made from szechuan pepper inducing a weird tingling feeling in the mouth and a lot of salty salivation. Then they are invited to place their hands in bowls of water and go through the VR experience. In many ways, the myth of individualism is a toxic narrative that is used to divide us into smaller, more manageable units. By emphasizing the importance of self-reliance and personal responsibility, we are encouraged to see ourselves as separate from the wider community. While it is true that individuals have unique qualities and perspectives that should be celebrated, it is also important to recognize that we are not meant to exist in isolation. In contrast, the sea sponge offers a compelling example of a more cooperative and harmonious existence. It’s cells lack inherent functions, instead adapting to fulfill the needs of the collective. Together they form the structure of the sponge, each completely unique and harmoniously interconnected with its environment. This collaboration facilitates the recycling of nutrients, thereby fostering an ecosystem that supports numerous other life forms. With this work I explore how sea sponges can serve to model a different way of thinking about our own society. By studying their cooperative nature and the benefits they bring to the ecosystem, we can begin to consider a different way of thinking about our own society, one which emphasizes the importance of collective efforts and interconnectedness. For this project I additionally made a system for procedurally generate 3d models of sea sponges.
